A crack is a program or piece of code that can bypass copy protection on software, such as video games and programs, to allow the user to use them without legal penalties. Cracks mainly consist of payload files and other executable files designed to replace part of an installer file. Cracks primarily benefit legitimate users by providing them with another way to get the full version of the software for free. In addition, cracks often fix bugs in software caused by faulty programming or coding errors before a company has a chance to release an official patch from their side. Sometimes anti-piracy companies will deliberately include glitches or bugs into their products just so that people will want to buy it out from under them which makes getting a crack more important than ever. Cracks are also used for piracy, which is where they differ from cracks designed to circumvent use restrictions. As piracy is illegal in most countries, this article will only deal with cracks that are used for circumventing use restrictions. The first cracking groups appeared around 1998 when the first scene releases became available on the internet. Originally these groups were often called "warez groups", but now this term usually refers to peer-to-peer networks that trade copyrighted material directly between users. When a company makes an update or patch for its software they usually do so by basically revising the original installer file and adding new code to it which sometimes causes a conflict if a crack has been found before its release. Sometimes if the company's installer file is much larger than usual, this can cause problems with the game, although most often it will still run. This is often due to the fact that the game will try to use files located in the wrong place; for example, files that are supposed to be in another sub-folder or "key" of the installer's directory structure. Sometimes, if the crack is old and already has all of its variables set up correctly, it can be used along with new patches/updates without any problems; but sometimes instead all that happens is that the game will crash or become unplayable due to its inability to find certain files.
